The decimal system was first used by the ancient Babylonians 3700 years ago. There are two speculative opinions on the reasons for its emergence and use.
One view is that: the ancient Babylonians used 360 days as a year, and the great circle of the earth's rotation around the sun was divided into 360 parts, each part being 1°, and the earth rotated 1° every day; six strings equal to the radius could be made end to end in the circle., each string corresponds to an angle of 60°, so 60 is used as the decimal unit.
Another opinion is that the ancient Babylonians adopted the base system because 60 is a multiple of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 30. It has the most factors among numbers within 100 and is easy to divide when dividing; and 60=12×5, 12 is the number of months in a year, and 5 is the number of fingers on one hand. Both numbers are very important.
