The scorching heat, strong winds, and shifting sand dunes of the vast golden desert have claimed countless animals' lives. However, domesticated camels have become people's reliable companions in traversing the desert, earning them the nickname "Desert Ship". But what are the camels' unique survival skills that enable them to endure such harsh conditions?
The camel's distinctive hump is its secret weapon. Based on the number of humps, camels can be divided into single-humped and double-humped species. Before setting off, camels must eat a hearty meal, as the nutrients are stored in their humps in the form of fat. Once they enter the desert, they rely entirely on this fat reserve.
Water is essential for desert survival, and camels' remarkable thirst-resistance is a multi-pronged strategy. First, they conserve water. Camels have very few sweat glands and hardly sweat at all; their feces are also drier than those of other mammals. Moreover, their powerful kidneys prevent excessive water loss in urine. Even more impressive, camels don't waste air either. When breathing out, their nostrils act like a condenser, collecting water around them to prevent moisture loss. At night, when humidity increases, their nostrils can even condense water from the air.
Camels also have ingenious ways to combat sandstorms. Their long, dense eyelashes protect their eyes from sand, and their nostrils are equipped with flaps to block wind and sand. Even their round, small ears, covered in fur, effectively keep sand out.
Even the scorching heat can't stop camels' journey. At 50°C, they remain unperturbed, with their body temperature fluctuating slightly according to temperature changes. On scorching sand, their wide feet not only withstand heat but also prevent sinking. When resting on hot sand, their chest and knees are covered with pads, which they use to push forward with their front legs and backward with their hind legs to clear away the hot sand before resting on the pads. These pads not only insulate but also create a ventilation gap between the camel and the ground, aiding heat dissipation.
Despite their remarkable desert survival skills, wild camels have become increasingly rare due to human activities. Wild single-humped camels became extinct at least 2,000 years ago, and wild double-humped camels were once thought extinct. Occasional sightings of "wild camels" were believed to be feral domestic camels. In 1999, a breakthrough occurred: genetic testing revealed a 3% genetic difference between wild camels found in Lop Nur, Xinjiang, China, and domestic camels, exceeding the genetic difference between humans and chimpanzees. Research confirmed that this was the world's only surviving wild camel population. Subsequently, the Altyn Tagh-Lop Nur Wild Double-humped Camel Nature Reserve was established as the world's only wild camel habitat. Today, there are fewer than a thousand wild camels remaining, making them even more precious than pandas.
