Anteaters almost exclusively eat ants and termites, and are unique to the Americas. However, ants and termites are insects that hide deep underground or in trees, and are quite large. How can they eat them?
Anteaters have no teeth and are a very ancient type of mammal, with only three species surviving today: the giant anteater, the two-toed anteater, and the lesser anteater. Among them, the giant anteater is the largest, living on the ground with a total length of 2–2.4 meters and a tail nearly half its total length, weighing over 30 kilograms; while the two-toed anteater is the smallest, only about 40 centimeters long and weighing less than 400 grams, living in trees. Its most distinctive feature is that its front feet only have two toes, while the rest of its toes have atrophied. However, its tail is extremely flexible, allowing it to grasp tree branches like a hand; the lesser anteater falls somewhere in between, able to live both on the ground and in trees.
Anteaters are the only surviving animals of the Edentata suborder in the Mammalia class. As their name suggests, their tongues are "super weapons" - long, thin, and flexible. Take the giant anteater as an example, its tongue reaches 30 centimeters long and is covered with sticky mucus, allowing it to pull ants and termites out of their nests and eat them. Moreover, anteaters have a highly sensitive sense of smell, able to detect the scent of ants from a great distance. Their front limbs are well-developed, with the third toe of the giant anteater reaching 10 centimeters in length, allowing it to forcibly dig up ant nests and raid ant colonies when necessary.
In addition to anteaters, there are other animals that mainly feed on ants, such as the short-snouted echidna in Australia, the armadillo in America, the pangolin in Asia and Africa, and the aardvark in Africa. Most anteater species are relatively primitive mammals, with distant evolutionary relationships among themselves. However, they not only share similar physical features, but also all have elongated heads, can extend long, slender tongues, and have sharp claws on their front limbs. These are all excellent tools for catching ants! This phenomenon of evolving similar physical features and behaviors due to similar lifestyles is known in biology as "convergent evolution".
