Spring is a season of vibrant life, with grass growing and birds singing. In temperate and high-latitude regions, most birds choose to start breeding in spring. These birds show a high degree of consistency in their breeding timing. What is the underlying mechanism behind this?
In fact, the main factor determining birds' breeding timing is food. Throughout the breeding process, wild birds not only need to consume a large amount of energy and nutrients themselves, but also require a large supply of food for newly hatched chicks. In spring, the temperature begins to warm up, and plants provide abundant tender shoots and rich nutrients. Various insects, spiders, earthworms, and rodents are also more active at this time. Whether it's herbivorous geese, carnivorous birds of prey, or omnivorous small birds like the white-headed babbler, they can all find abundant food during this period.
Therefore, the vast majority of temperate birds choose to start breeding in the warm spring. If there are still sufficient food resources available in summer, some small birds like the yellowhammer and house sparrows will seize the opportunity to breed a second or even a third time. Large birds such as swans, white cranes, and golden eagles, due to their larger body size, require a longer time for their chicks to grow and develop, so they can only breed once a year.
For birds living in regions with unclear seasons, the total amount of food available in different months of the year is generally consistent. Therefore, the breeding timing of tropical birds is relatively unpredictable. For example, the brown-winged tern on the Indian Ocean sister islands can breed once every seven months. Many species of pigeons, however, are less constrained by food availability because their chicks initially grow on semi-solid pigeon milk secreted from the parents' crop. Some species, such as the spotted dove, can even breed four to five times a year in the cold winter.
The emperor penguins living in the Southern Hemisphere are even more special. Their breeding period is longer, with eggs laid in late autumn in Antarctica and chicks hatching in early spring the following year. By then, they can just catch up with the abundant spring resources and ensure their healthy growth and development.
